May 3, 2018

120/2341) The 3 Brewers, Heartland:  Domo Origami by The 3 Brewers of Ontario:  **1/2; 6.5%, 35 ibu;  Thursday cask;  their Westhoek Saison featured beer with Matcha (powdered tea), grapefruit, Sorachi Ace hops, Grains of Paradise;  never mind murky, it's downright muddy;  rich grapefruit pulp nose with tea;  Asian tea and soft grapefruit flavours;  tannins are especially prominent in the finish;

May 2, 2018

119/2340) Home:  Dark Saison by Mascot Brewery of Ontario:  **; 8%; nose is a bit yeasty but beyond this it is hard to believe this is a saison;  sweet, roasty, malty;

April 30, 2018

117/2338) Home:  Orange Creamsic Ale by Railway City Brewing of Ontario:  **1/2; 4.8%; brewed with hand zested oranges, vanilla beans and oats;  smells exactly like an orange creamsicle;   flavours of orange, vanilla, a mild graininess with a sweet vanilla finish; a novelty beer but a good one;

117/2338) Home:  Brewed Awakening Black Coffee IPA by Bell City Brewing Co. of Ontario:  **; 6%; unpasteurized; sweet coffee nose;  rich coffee flavours, dry hop finish;  not a bad fusion;

April 29, 2018

115/2336) Home:  Easy, Tiger Lemongrass Ale by Silly Sir Brewing Company of Ontario:  **; 5.1%; brewed with wheat and lemongrass;  faintly lemony nose;  delightful lemongrass flavours, as promised;  perhaps the ideal patio beer;

115/2336) Home:  Mr. Canoehead by Sleeping Giant Brewery of Ontario:  **1/2; 5.1%, 45 ibu;  "Just a hoppy red ale";  brewed with oats; "The malt and Citra hops of this aromatic red ale will strike you like a lightning bolt…without fusing the canoe to your head";  as soon as I opened the can I sensed the Citra hops;  prominent in finish and after taste;  malt is very much in background but present enough to provide a nice contrast;

In case I have lost the young people here, Mr. Canoehead was a genuine Canadian hero featured on "The Frantics" who counted one Rick Green, later a fixture on The Red Green Show, as a member.  As alluded to earlier, Mr. Canoehead was an individual who was portaging through Algonquin Park when a bolt of lightning welded his canoe to his skull.  This limited employment opportunities so he became a superhero.  By way of example, on one episode he disguised himself as a salad bar.  "It was croutons for the criminals".

April 28, 2018

113/2334) Home:  The Answer by Pint Pursuits Brewing Co. of Ontario:  *1/2; a 5%, 18 ibu Helles Lager; pours clear, golden;  sweet, fruity (berries) nose with similar flavours;  pleasant enough;

Of course, The Answer is beer!

113/2334) Home:  25th Anniversaire by Unibroue of Quebec:  **1/2; 10.5%, 20 ibu; a Belgian style dark ale;  strong, tart cherry nose;  tastes of dark cherries, alcohol, bitter chocolate;  not quite the Black Forest cake experience the label suggests, unless one is using unsweetened chocolate, but very nice just the same;

April 27, 2018

112/2333) C'est What:  As Far Back As.... by Great Lakes Brewery of Ontario:  **1/2;  6.4%, 40 ibu; a New England IPA;  typical hazy appearance;  citrusy nose;  people like to use the word "juicy" when referring to New England IPAs and it is appropriate here;  flavours of citrus and zest;

Friday 29 June 2018

April 24, 2018

111/2332) Radler by Ace Hill Brewing Company of Ontario:  **; 2.5; brewed with organic apple, grapefruit, orange, lemon and lime juices; fresh, natural tasting juices;  very refreshing;

Radlers began as a blend of grapefruit juice and beer and were favoured by German cyclists.

April 21, 2018

109/2330) Home:  Cup & Saucer English Ale by Manitoulin Brewing Company of Ontario:  **; 5%;  named for a jagged outcrop at the northern tip of the Niagara Escarpment says the can though Google Maps sends me to Manitoulin Island;  rich dark brown;  malty nose;  malty with caramel notes;  mildly dry finish;

I can sense how some might want to call this a bitter.

109/2330) Home:  Rye Not? Amber Ale by Mascot Brewery of Ontario:  *1/2; 6.6%; sweet, malty caramel nose; malty with a rye snap and a dry finish;

April 20, 2018

108/2329) Home:  Locker Room Lager by Post-Game Brewing of Ontario:  *1/2; 4.7%; all natural, no preservatives/additions; sweet, fruity, somewhere between grainy and bready nose;

To mark the day of the year when stupid young people are duped into celebrating Adolph Hitler's birthday I try to choose a beer of poor taste and what is heard in locker rooms tends to fill that requirement, if it is allowed to take place these days.

April 18, 2018

107/2328) Home:  Brune by Brasserie de l'Abbaye des Rocs of Belgium:  **; 10.3%;  undergoes "triple fermentation"; nose is sweet dried fruit;  not as sweet as many of this dark brown style;

April 17, 2018

166/2327) Home:  Black House by Modern Times Beer of California, U.S.A.:  **; 5.8%, 40 ibu;  an oatmeal coffee stout;  brewed with barley, wheat, oats as well as 75% Ethiopian and 25% Sumatran coffee;  what's more, they roast their own coffee;  the nose is strong, dark, fresh coffee with dry unsweetened chocolate;  strong coffee flavours but with just a bit of sweetness and a dry, unsweetened chocolate finish;

The tin indicates, "This beer is vegan".

105/2326) Gouden Carolus Cuvee van de Keizer (Red) by Brouwerij Het Anker of Belgium:  **; 10%; very pale;  brewed with three different spices, which aren't listed on the label, and Belgian hops;  yeasty nose with mild spice; flavours of candi sugar, yeast and alcohol;

April 15, 2018

104/2325) Home:  Gouden Carolus Cuvee van de Keizer (Blauw), Jaargang 2017 by Brouwerij Het Anker of Belgium:  **1/2; 11%;  burnt sugar and dark fruit nose;  soft flavours of dark fruit, candi sugar, mild presence of alcohol;

April 14, 2018

102/2323) Home:  Grand Cru by Brasserie de l'Abbaye du Val-Dieu of Belgium:  **1/2; 10.5%, 20 ibu;  brewed in the Abbey;  undergoes a secondary fermentation in the bottle which causes the beer to be under high pressure - the  cork shot out like a howitzer;  pours a deep rich brown;  sweet dark fruit nose;  rich dark fruit, mild roast;  delicious;

Some quotations from the label:  "In Vinculo Paeis", "the only thue Belgian abbey beer"; "ancient infusion method", "traditional recipe handed down by the monk-brewers of the cistercian Abbey of Val-Dieu";

103/2324) Home:  Haandbry Bukk Norwegian Doppelbock by Haandbryggereit AS of Norway:  **; 8%; nose is mainly coffee;  coffee flavours, hint of mocha towards finish, and alcohol;

April 12, 2018

100/2321) The 3 Brewers, Heartland:  Where There's Smoke... by The 3 Brewers of Ontario:  **;  5.6%, 30 ibu;  a Thursday cask;  their Saint Stout with Maille Whiskey, fenugreek, sarsaparilla, chipotles;  roasty, grainy nose, mercifully little sign of smoke;  roast and chocolate flavours;  I am getting the fenugreek (maple) and sarsaparilla towards the finish;  there is the mildest hint of chipotles in the after taste;

101/2322) The 3 Brewers, Heartland:  Westhoek Saison by The 3 Brewers of Ontario:  *1/2; 6%, 35 ibu;  a spelt saison beer; citrusy nose;  lemony flavours, hint of spice, very summery;

Westhoek is a region in Flanders.

April 11, 2018

99/2320) Home:  Upper Canada Repatriation Lager by Henderson Brewing of Ontario:  **; 6%, 30 ibu; Ides of March 2018 beer;  sweet, dark burnt sugar nose with fruit notes;  mild hop bite, sweet notes, such great memories;

It is a great story.  The people at Henderson's approached Sleeman, who own the rights to the old Upper Canada Brewing lineup, and received permission to brew Upper Canada Rebellion.  It was a favourite of mine and long time followers will recall it was listed as a beer from way-back that I miss.  The label also drops name Connor's, another old favourite.

It was first brewed in 1987 to mark 150th anniversary of the Upper Canada Rebellion, which was derided at the time as another dreadful "populist" movement.

April 9, 2018

98/2319) Home:  Over My Dad Body by Great Lakes Brewery of Ontario:  **; a 5%, 25 ibu pilsner;  very fruity nose;  sweet fruitiness overshadows Euro-hop bitterness;

Monday 25 June 2018

April 8, 2018

97/2318) Home:  Hopped & Confused by Mill Street of Ontario:  **;  a 4.7% session ale;  pours opaque; nose of Asian tea;  fruity Asian tea flavours;

April 7, 2018

96/2317) The 3 Brewers, Liberty Village:  Hi Fidelity Pale Ale by The 3 Brewers of Ontario:  *1/2; 5.7%, 30 ibu; opaque;  herbal hops to the nose;  dry, mineral flavours with a dry after taste;

The beer's name is a tribute to the fact that the building used to house the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company of Canada which manufactured phonograph records.

April 6, 2018

95/2316) Home:  Straffe Hendrik Brugs Quadrupel by Brouwerij de Halve Maan of Belgium:  **;  11%;  top fermented; referments in the bottle which explains why the cork shot out in such a comical fashion;  brewed in Bruges since 1856;  pours dark brown, soft fluffy head;  brewed with candi sugar;  rich yeasty nose with dark sugar, dark fruit;  flavours of raisins, figs, mild toastiness;  hides the alcohol very well;

April 5, 2018

94/2315) The 3 Brewers, Heartland:  The Witch's Promise by The 3 Brewers of Ontario:  **; 6.6%, 40 ibu;  a blend of their Winter Warmer and Saint Stout with Crème de Cassis aged over American oak;  reminds me a bit of the Brown (which is still a favourite, especially with food) with dry chocolate notes;  I am getting the Cassis towards the finish and throughout the after taste;  it's also in the nose with chocolate notes;  not much hint of the Winter Warmer, though;

April 4, 2018

93/2314) Home:  Radio The Mothership by Collective Arts of Ontario:  **1/2;  8.5%, 100 ibu; Imperial IPA;  brewed with Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe hops;  tropical fruit nose;  tropical fruit, citrus, bitter earthiness;

March 31, 2018

91/2312) C'est What:  Charcoal Porter with Sarsaparilla by Innocente Brewing Company of Ontario:  **1/2; 5.1%, 25 ibu;  roasty nose with sweet sarsaparilla notes; near coconut sweetness with full sarsaparilla and roast flavours;

March 27, 2018

90/2311) Home:  Beard of Zeus by Great Lakes Brewery of Ontario:  **; 11.9%, 28 ibu: a barrel aged barleywine, brewed in collaboration with Kyle Teichert of Half Hours On Earth Brewery in 2017 for the 30th anniversary of Great Lakes and aged nine months in Four Roses barrels;  nose of dark fruit, alcohol;  woody notes, dark fruit, alcohol flavours;

March 26, 2018

89/2310) Department of Hubris by Great Lakes Brewery of Ontario:  **1/2; an 11%, 20 ibu barrel aged Belgian Strong Dark Ale;  fizzy at first, dissipates quickly, leaving no head to speak of;  bourbon, oak, dark fruit nose;  some sweetness but not vanilla, more like toffee;  a complex blend of raisin, oak, bourbon;

March 24, 2018

80/2301) Birreria Volo:  Echoes of the Void by Redline Brewhouse of Ontario:  **1/2;  8.5%;  sweet, nearly berry, nose;  described as a "Crème brulee imperial stout" and indeed there are sweet, burnt white sugar notes;

This is my second Péché Day.

81/2302) Birreria Volo:  Skeleton Key with Coffee by Bellwoods Brewery of Ontario:  **;  10.5%; a rum barrel aged Imperial stout with spices and coffee; Dr. Pepper/tangerine nose;  herbal, spiced flavours with a rum finish;

Things started earlier than last year, at 11AM which helped with the crush but there was still a line when I arrived prior to 11.

82/2303) Birreria Volo:  B. A. Nowhere by Merit Brewing Co. of Ontario:  **1/2; a 10.5% bourbon barrel aged imperial stout;  nose of vanilla and alcohol; flavours of bourbon, oak and vanilla;

The early opening also made it possible for me to visit and leave in time to attend Willie's wake at Tracks Brewpub.  He was one of a kind.

83/2304) Birreria Volo:  Péché Bourbon 2017 by Dieu du Ciel! of Quebec:  **1/2;  9.5%;  strong, earthy (dirty, muddy) coffee nose;  in the tasting, coffee takes a back seat to bourbon and oak;

These were all five ounce pours.

84/2305) Birreria Volo:  Péché Bourbon 2018 by Dieu du Ciel! of Quebec:  **1/2; 9.5%;  nose similar to above but the flavours are sweeter with more vanilla;

Owing to my lateness I am not revealing a confidence when I mention that the original Bar Volo will be re-opening after all.  The initial deal fell through which might not be bad as it was in front of this building where an unfortunate young lady was found murdered a few months back.  The anticipated location will be on St. Nicholas Street, not all that far from Yonge and Dundonald.

85/2306) Birreria Volo:  On Fleek!, a collaboration between Stillwater Brewing of Maryland and Casita Cerveceria who have breweries in Vermont and North Carolina:  **; 13%;  the nose is red wine and vanilla;  coffee, cocoa, oak flavours;

Fleek is slang for fancy, according to Chris, behind the bar.  I have since learned the term was originally applied to perfectly groomed eyebrows.

86/2307) Birreria Volo:  Black Forest Bastard by Nickel Brook of Ontario:  **1/2; 8.9%;  smells like a boozy Black Forest cake; flavours of chocolate, cherries, marvellous;

There was also Péché Mortel on cask which was a last minute addition.

87/2308)  Birreria Volo:  Belgian Stout (2016 Vintage) by Exchange Brewery of Ontario:  **1/2; a 6.7% oak barrel aged Belgian style stout;  cola notes to the nose;  tastes of cola, sarsaparilla;

The cask made up, in part, for the absence of Founders CBS Bourbon Maple Syrup Barrel Aged Stout with coffee and chocolate which became unavailable to Birreria Volo at the last minute.

88/2309) Birreria Volo:   Péché Latte by Dieu du Ciel of Ontario:  **1/2; a 9.5% Imperial coffee milk stout, on nitro;  usual strong coffee nose is muted, but only slightly, by sweet creaminess;  sweet, milky latte café au lait flavours with a dark coffee finish;

Another very successful Péché Day.  The early opening was inspired.

March 23, 2018

79/2300) Home:  Live Transmission Milkshake IPA by Flying Monkeys of Ontario:  **; 6.3%; brewed with orange peel, grapefruit, "a soft coconut white tea"; Citra, Idaho 7 and Mosaic hops and lactose;  pours clear (or nearly so - only a slight haze); there is a hint of lactose to the nose but it is mainly citrus;  rich citrus flavours followed quickly by a hit of lactose then a dry, nearly bitter finish;

March 21, 2018

78/2299) Home:  Life In The Clouds Hazy IPA by Collective Arts of Ontario:  **1/2; 6.1%;  hazy, indeed;  tropical citrusy nose;  tropical citrus, resiny finish;  a standard New England IPA but I like it;

Sunday 24 June 2018

77/2298) Home:  Juicy! by Garrison Brewing of Nova Scotia:  **1/2;  8% Double IPA in the East Coast style;  brewed with New England ale yeast;  late addition hop blasted;  heavily dry hopped;  I was instructed to drink from the can but I did not so this;  unfiltered but uncommonly clear for the style just the same;  I smell peaches, mango, pineapple;  tropical fruit flavours with a touch, but only a touch, of bitterness at the finish;

March 19, 2018

76/2297) Home:  Panache Session IPA by Stack Brewing of Ontario:  **; 4.5%; named for Lake Panache; fresh citrus nose; somewhat washed out sweet fruity, citrusy flavours;  a solid session ale;

March 18, 2018

74/2295) Home:  I, The Mountain And The Leprechaun Flute by Sawdust City of Ontario:  **1/2;  7.0%, 70 ibu;  an India Red Ale, purchased at the brewery;  brewed with oats, wheat, Summit, Mosaic and Amarillo hops in collaboration with I, the Mountain;  pours red;  nose is grapefruit and citrus peel;  piney, grapefruit notes but it's not just another IPA - the malt backdrop is quite unlike any other IPA, rich and sweet;

75/2296) Home:  Get It In Ya! by Sawdust City of Ontario:  **;  an 8.5%, 55 ibu double IPA brewed in collaboration with Beer & Other SHHH;  dedicated to Bruce Thorn;  brewed with oat malt, flaked wheat, Ella, Vic Secret and Galaxy hops, from Australia;  musky and dank; musty nose with citrus zest;  bitter flavours and after taste;  earthy, musty hop flavours and bitterness throughout; also purchased at the brewery;

March 13, 2018

69/2290) Sawdust City Brewing, Gravenhurst:  Titania Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout by Sawdust City of Ontario:  **1/2;  this version is 12.2%;  nose is bourbon, oak, mild vanilla;  oak, bourbon, raisins, dark fruit;

On our way home after a day, and night, in the paradise that is Huntsville.

70/2291) Flying Monkeys, Barrie:  Heartbreak Breakfast Porter by Flying Monkeys of Ontario:  **;  6.4%;  brewed with lactose and Earl Grey tea;  roasty nose with tea;  Earl Grey stands out among chocolate and roasted malt;

71/2292) Flying Monkeys, Barrie:  Bohemian Rapstouty by Flying Monkeys of Ontario:  **; a 6.3%  stout with espresso;  roasty with muted espresso and mild balsamic notes;

Flying Monkeys is a very funky joint.  The music is wild and it looks like Elroy Jetson's room, as a teenager.

March 11, 2018

68/2289) Home:  Café Del Bastardo 2018 by Nickel Brook of Ontario:  **1/2;  they have dialed it up to 12% for 2018;  70 ibu;  barrel aged;  brewed with malted barley, malted wheat, flaked barley and flaked wheat, flaked oats, demerara sugar and Detour coffee beans;  coffee bean nose with vanilla and oak;  flavours of oak, dark sugar, unsweetened chocolate;  very nice;

65/2286) The 3 Brewers, Heartland:  Saint Stout (nitro) by The 3 Brewers of Ontario:  **; 5.6%, 40 ibu;  an American Stout with rye;  soft persistent head;  rye is very much in the background lending a mildly bitter snap especially at the finish; subdued chocolate and coffee notes;  the most recent feature beer;

Purchased at the brewery

March 4, 2018

62/2283) Home:  Off The Leash India Pale Ale by High Park Brewery of Ontario:  **;  6.5%, 57 ibu;  brewed in Cambridge, Ontario;  a blend of English and American IPA styles; soft fluffy head;  very bready nose - it put me in the mood to bake which I did (a German style loaf using Railway City's cranberry lager and some spent grain popovers);  bready flavours with a snap of English and American hops;  bitter after taste;  an unusual and interesting effort;

March 3, 2018

61/2282) Bar Hop, Toronto:  Greenwood IPA by Left Field Brewery of Ontario:  **; 6.3%, billed as a Vermont IPA;  hazy, citrusy tropical nose;  similar flavours with a bitter backdrop and finish;  I admit, these Vermont IPAs are beginning to blend together for me;

This was the original Bar Hop on King Street.  I finally managed to squeeze my way in.  Any other time I have tried it has been a solid wall of people sitting on each others' shoulders.  Maybe the ban on driving on King Street really is having an impact.

March 2, 2018

60/2281) Home:  Apocalypse by Les Brasseurs R.J. of Quebec:  **1/2;  9%, 60 ibu;  Belgian Double Stout;  fermented twice, once with English yeast, then with Belgian yeast; brewed with Bravo and Cascade hops;  dark, roasted, nearly burnt coffee nose;  dark, roasty notes and alcohol;  lovely;

58/2279) Home:  30th Anniversary Beatrix Baltic Porter by Great Lakes Brewery of Ontario:  *1/2; 7.4%, 20 ibu; brewed with coffee and cocoa nibs;  as is often the case when GLB uses coffee, the coffee is a bit strong;  nose of bitter cocoa and coffee;  mostly coffee taste;  a bit of a disappointment given the source;

February 24, 2018

56/2277) Goose Island Brewhouse:  Bitter Half by Goose Island Beer Co. of Ontario:  **;  a 4.7%, 28 ibu Best Bitter;  biscuity nose;  malty with black tea notes;

The story is that in the late 1880s, Blythe's veterinarian rescued and looked after a number of animals including a bear cub named Bruin who would give "impromptu boxing exhibitions" causing his office to become "Blythe's unofficial zoo - and a popular spot for gatherings".

55/2276) Home:  Belgian Tripel by Mascot Brewery of Ontario:  *1/2;  7.8%; strong cloves to the nose;  sweet, yeasty, honey flavours;  a bit sweet for my liking;
