October 12, 2019

301/2901) Home:  Flight Plan DIPA by Lake of Bays Brewing Co. of Ontario:  **; 8%, 84 ibu; brewed with Simcoe and Amarillo hops as well as Magnum - it was dry hopped with the first two, and kettle hopped with all three; oats were added to the malt bill;  it pours clear which is uncommon of late for an IPA;  mild citrus nose; flavours of pine with light citrus;

October 10, 2019

299/2899) The 3 Brewers, Heartland:  Curtains and Drapes by The 3 Brewers of Ontario:  **1/2; 4.8%, 34 ibu; La Florida (no, not the Blonde) dry hopped with Cascade, Summit and Mandarina Bavaria hops; a lot like La Florida; the herbal aspect to nose is new and so are the amped up citrusy flavours;

300/2900) Home:  Jai Alai IPA by Cigar City Brewing of Florida, U.S.A.:  **; 7.5%, 65 ibu; brewed with wheat and oats; nose is tangerine with floral notes; citrusy with an herbal edge at the finish;

October 8, 2019

297/2897) Pub On Main Street, Brampton:  House Lager, she's not sure who makes it for them:  *; I did not ask further questions; a pretty ordinary lager;

The place has been open more than a year but scarcely anyone was there.  This was more of an exploration than a beer tasting.  To enter you have to climb a steep flight of stairs between the shops along Main Street South.  I had the impression it would be a lot smaller given the entrance and the exit-only door out back but it is roomy and there is even space for a pool table.  If my visit was typical I cannot speculate how they manage keep the doors open.

298/2898) Home:  After Hours Old Fashioned Cocktail Pale Ale by Central City Brewers and Distillers of British Columbia:  **1/2; 6.5%, 35 ibu; inspired by the Old Fashioned whisky cocktail; brewed with orange peel, whisky, cherries, Lohin McKinnon single malt whisky and house made bitters; I can smell the cherry, the whisky and the zest; tastes very much like an Old Fashioned what with the cherry, essential oil of orange and whisky; it is delicious; I like it even more than the similarly inspired Henderson beer;

October 7, 2019

296/2896) Home:  Secret Wave by Badlands Brewing of Ontario:  **1/2; 6.5%; brewed with Vic Secret hops; nose is pine and citrus; sharp pineapple flavours with citrus and stone fruit;

295/2895) Home:  Dora # 15 by Badlands Brewing of Ontario:  **; 6.5%; brewed with lactose and dry hopped with Galaxy and Mosaic; peach and pineapple to the nose; I do not particularly notice the lactose; mostly it is pineapple with a hint of sweetness at the finish;

October 5, 2019

294/2894) Badlands Bottle Shed and Beer Garden:  Lil Cashmere Shoes by Badlands Brewing of Ontario:  **; 3.6%; described as a Table IPA or a milder version of their The Kid With The Cashmere Shoes; brewed with Cashmere hops; tastes a little washed out; citrusy nose and flavours;

The bottle shop and beer garden is a very nice setting with lawn games and picnic tables.  They have purchased and refurbished an old school bus to use when it gets cold.

October 3, 2019

293/2893) The 3 Brewers, Heartland:  Basic Witch by The 3 Brewers of Ontario:  **;5.2%, 25 ibu; a pumpkin spice latte cask designed for their Oktoberfest party; described as a Munich Marzen with coffee, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, vanilla and honey;  mercifully some of these are not prominent in the least; to the nose it is mostly nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon; basically, a pumpkin pie spiced Marzen;

Justin expressed disappointment that not all of the ingredients were detectable.  I can only comment on the beer that he made and not the one he wishes he had made.  I found this one very nice.

October 2, 2019

292/2892) Home:  H² Golden Ale by Herald Haus Brewing Co. of Ontario:  *; 4.7%; grainy, malty nose; a standard, grainy, golden ale;

291/2891) Home:  Snooze You Lose by All or Nothing Brewhouse of Ontario:  **; a 5.0% honey brown ale brewed with wildflower honey; pours very dark; roasty malt nose; mild hint of honey but mostly roasted, perhaps a touch burnt, malt; very hearty;

The Darcys are a Toronto music duo who to this point had escaped my notice.

September 29, 2019

288/2888) Home:  September DIPA by Badlands Brewery of Ontario:  **1/2; 8.2%; brewed with Galaxy, Mosaic and Simcoe hops; murky as per usual; getting tangerine to nose; pineapple, tangerine, mild pine; the abv, again, is very well disguised;

289/2889) Home:  Dora #13 by Badlands Brewery of Ontario:  **1/2; 6.5%; dry hopped with Galaxy and El Dorado hops; their stated intent was for more "assertive bitterness" than usual; nose is mostly peach and pine; swampy; some piney bitterness but there is a large dose of what they have referred to as "candied hop" flavours with peaches and pineapple;

September 28, 2019

285/2885) Home:  Citra Cashmere IPA by Badlands Brewing of Ontario:  **; 6.5%; dry hopped with the aforementioned hops; melon and citrus nose with similar flavours;

Perth Brewery was established in 1993 but I am only discovering this brewery now.

September 27, 2019

283/2883) Home:  Lumber For Ale by Badlands Brewing of Ontario:  **; 6.5%; brewed with Simcoe and Amarillo hops; mildly sweet pineapple nose; pine and pineapple flavours;

The name of this beer refers to an exchange of beer for a stained wood table, not an expansion for The Settlers of Catan.

284/2884) Home:  Astrolabe Session IPA by Whitewater Brewing of Ontario:  *1/2; 5%, 60 ibu; touch of citrus to the nose; mostly one note  - very bitter and resiny;

This is another example of the expansion of the meaning of "Session IPA".  At 5% it's not exactly a session beer in my view.

September 26, 2019

282/2882) Home:  Square Wheels Hazy IPA by Town Brewing of Ontario:  **; 6.2%; in addition to the regular four ingredients this one is brewed with malted wheat and flaked wheat; it is definitely hazy; features Mosaic and Idaho 7 hops; orange nose and flavours; mild wheat malt backdrop;

September 25, 2019

281/2881) Home:  Lazy Hazy IPAzy by MacLean's Ales of Ontario:  **; a 4.8% New England style session ale; cloudy; fresh citrusy nose; not quite so much as far as the flavours are concerned - it feels a bit washed out;

September 24, 2019

I did not make it to any TBW events, not even C'est What's Festival of Craft Brewers which I spend much of the year looking forward to.

278/2878) C'est What:  Boat Jazz DDH DIPA by Stone City Ales of Ontario:  **; 8%; opaque; nose is bitter with an herbal edge; uncommonly sweet for a Double IPA, trace of bitterness at finish; rather malty as well;  does a solid job of hiding that abv;

September 22, 2019

274/2874) Home:  Fiera IPA by Birra Dell'Eremo of Italy:  *1/2; 6.5%, 45 ibu; billed as an American IPA; very herbal nose with a touch of citrus; herbal, mildly bitter flavours with a touch of orange;

September 19, 2019

271/2871) The 3 Brewers, Heartland:  La Tampa Bay by The 3 Brewers of Ontario:  **; 4.8%, 34 ibu; La Florida with orange puree, lime peel, coriander and chamomile; on cask; primarily lime and orange to the nose; emphasized orange of La Florida, along with a nice edge of lime; herbal edge is muted; possibly a couple ingredients too many;

September 14, 2019

267/2867) Home:  Interstellar IPA by Forked River Brewing of Ontario:  **; 6.5%, 55 ibu; brewed with Comet hops (of course); pours hazy; nose is pears and biscuity malt; biscuity with hints of melon and pine;

Interstellar IPA was "created in honor of Oumuamua, the very first interstellar object ever detected in our solar system and discovered by Londoner Rob Weryk in 2017".

September 9, 2019

265/2865) Home:  IPA No. 11 by Collective Arts of Ontario:  **; 5.8%; double dry hopped with Mosaic and Idaho 7 hops; also contains lactose and wheat malt; hazy; very citrusy nose; lactose is not overpowering rather it takes the bitter edge off the hops; tropical flavours;

September 8, 2019

264/2864) Home:  Perth County Conspiracy North American Pale Ale by Herald Haus Brewing Co. of Ontario:  **; 5%;  the nose is grainy with light fruit notes; citrus, melon, grain flavours

The Perth County Conspiracy was a Canadian folk-rock band, active from mid-1960s to the late 1970s.  I like to imagine that they played at the Colonial Hotel in Grand Bend.  I gather it is not a great place and it likely wasn't then either but I liked to eat there when I was very young.

August 20, 2019

250/2850) Refined Fool Brewing Company, Sarnia:  Antique Peepshow IPA by Refined Fool Brewing Company of Ontario:  **; 6.1%, 70 ibu; leafy hopped nose; strong malt backbone; hoppy, herbal, leafy flavours;

This is one of two locations, mid-town as opposed to downtown.  Food is by Burger Rebellion, quite nice and nicely priced.  The hallway leading to the loos is adorned with poster sized prints of one star reviews, most of which are pretty funny.  One warns that they do not have Bud Light and advises the reader not to bother.

251/2851) Refined Fool Brewing Company:  Horizontal Tower Session Ale by Refined Fool Brewing Company of Ontario:  **; 4.3%, 30 ibu; dry nose; dry herbal flavours;

243/2843) The 3 Brewers, Heartland:  La Florida by The 3 Brewers of Ontario:  **1/2; 4.8%, 42 ibu; a fruit beer brewed with with passion fruit and guava;  opaque; a whole variety of citrus to the nose, like a glass of SunnyD; variety of fruits, delicious, refreshing with a hint of hoppy bitterness towards the finish; I might have been fooled into believing this was an IPA;

August 13, 2019

241/2841) Home:  Beer League Lager by Central City Brewing of British Columbia:  *1/2; 5%; pours clear; a pretty standard lager with a crisp finish;

July 26, 2019

217/2817) Birreria Volo:  Janky by Matron Brewing of Ontario:  **; 6%; nose of peach and citrus; mild grapefruit and stone fruit flavorus;

On their website, Matron seems rather proud of how empowering their name is but all I can think of is Kenneth Williams and the rest of the Carry On gang which may not have been the intent.

218/2818) Birreria Volo:  Kickbacks and Keg Deals by Blood Brothers Brewing of Ontario:  *1/2; 5%; brewed with Centennial, Cascade and Waimea hops; cloudy; strong nose of steeped tea; tastes of tannins with tropical notes;

The event, for as I have mentioned before I seem only to show up here for "events", is called Hazy Days which is an off-shoot of the Hazy Waters festival.  Twenty of their favourite hoppy beer brewers are featured.

219/2819) Birreria Volo:  Two Tickets To Paradise Double IPA by Barncat Artisan Ales of Ontario:  *1/2; 8.1%; featuring Simcoe and Galaxy hops; murky/swampy; nose of peaches with tropical notes; I can taste the alcohol, an unusual experience for an IPA no matter how strong, along with grapefruit  zest followed by a bitter finish;

As per usual these are five ounce pours.

220/2820) Birreria Volo:  Voodoo Haze Mama by Great Lakes Brewery of Ontario: **; a 7.2% New England IPA; cloudy; juicy nose; citrusy with a distinct lack of bitterness;

There are quite a few people behind the bar, as many as six, but there is a distinct lack of pouring, no more than one individual all afternoon.  Given that there are no servers as such, it is strictly bar service, one can only marvel at how many it takes to achieve so little.

221/2821) Birreria Volo:  Hexaverse by Bellwoods Brewery of Ontario:  **; a 7.2% IPA with Ahtanum, Mosaic and Citra hops; fresh citrus nose; citrusy flavours with a touch of zest; another fine IPA from Bellwoods;

A secondary irritant concerning the lack of activity of consequence behind the bar is that the wait is so long that, assuming I have left, the floor staff have returned the water bottle I had at my table to the bar for the second time.

222/2822) Birreria Volo:  Menagerie by Fairweather Brewing of Ontario:  **1/2; a 5.5% single hop pale ale with Idaho Gem; fresh citrusy nose; no bitterness; nearly sweet citrus; a relatively new hop to me but quite nice;
