May 29, 2020

148/3128) Home:  AGD - Alberta Genuine Draft by Big Rock Brewing of Alberta:  *; 5.0% pale lager; it is entirely probable that this was brewed in Etobicoke; clear; pale, straw colour; scent of apple; sweet, fruity; adjunct free;  "hand crafted", "Batch brewed";

This could have come from Badlands - high praise indeed.

Third Moon Brewing slips stickers into the box when you come to the Brewery in Milton to pick up your order.  It occurs to me it would be a great idea to apply these to those unadorned Stonehooker bottles to be able to collect your deposit.

May 28, 2020

May 14, 2020

137/3117) Home:  Rye On Rye 6 by Boulevard Brewing Company of Missouri, U.S.A.:  **1/2; 12.9%, 16 ibu; nose is whisky, cola; tastes of cola, spice and oak with a touch of vanilla; aged in six year Templeton Rye Whiskey barrels;

This is not to be confused with Red Sky At Night Wine Barrel Aged Imperial Stout by Wellington.

May 5, 2020

135/3115) Home:  Lemon Shandy by Steam Whistle Brewing of Ontario:  **; 2.5%; pours clear; strong lemon flavours; I will return to this when the warmer weather arrives;

April 30, 2020

132/3112) Home:  Utopias 10th Anniversary by Boston Beer Company of Massachusetts, U.S.A.:  ***; "alcohol content over 27%";  this bottle is from 2012; brewed with four malts, three varieties of hops, champagne yeast and maple syrup; a blend of batches including 20 year old Triple Bock, which was once available locally, aged in Buffalo Trace Distillery bourbon barrels, port casks from Portugal and rum casks from Nicaragua; mine is bottle #10474; nose of figs, raisins, very boozy, sweet maple; sherry or port like with sweet maple notes, figs raisins, dates, vanilla, booze; quite something;

Here is an instance of being guilty of buying something and forgetting about it.  There is another mor recent bottle to follow, at some point.

April 27, 2020

130/3110) Home:  Milk Chocolate Stout by Stonehooker Brewing Company of Ontario:  *1/2; 6.5%; bit of mocha to the nose; chocolate sweetness; a bit thin and under-carbonated for my liking;

131/3111) Home:  Mad Capreol Vanilla Porter by Stonehooker Brewing Company of Ontario:  **; 6.1%; much stronger vanilla flavours than scent; sweet;

The problem with those generic blank bottles identified with tags is that The Beer Store will not accept them for the return of your deposit.

April 26, 2020

128/3108) Home:  Dubbel Black Trappist Style Ale by Stonehooker Brewing Company of Ontario:  **; 7.9%; pours a very dark brown; nose of dried fruit with a hint of yeast; not as sweet as many a Dubbel but there are the characteristic dried fruit flavours; a solid Dubbel;

129/3109) Home:  Tripel Belgian Ale by Stonehooker Brewing Company of Ontario:  *1/2; 7.9%; pale brown; sugary sweetness to nose; sweet and musty, lacking the dried fruit notes characteristic of the style; this would not be my first choice for a Tripel;

Wednesday 10 June 2020

April 22, 2020

126/3106) Home:  Even Keeled English Best Bitter by Stonehooker Brewing Company of Ontario:  **; 4.6%, 31 ibu; rich, malty with a touch of caramel sweetness; a very fine ESB;

When all this nuttiness is over I look forward to enjoying this on tap or better still, on cask, accompanied by glasses of many others of their list.  Ideally, the light rail line along Hurontario Street will be built soon.

127/3107) Home:  Wrought Iron Stout by Stonehooker Brewing Company of Ontario:  **1/2;  6.6%, 65 ibu; dark, roasty nose with a hint of mocha; very dark roasty flavours are mildly offset by a hint of mocha;

April 21, 2020

124/3104) Home:  Gollywobbler Session IPA by Stonehooker Brewing Company of Ontario:  **1/2; 3.9%, 18 ibu; another clear one - hurrah! -well, mostly clear:  slightly hazy; nose of oranges and peaches; mild citrus flavours, no bitterness to speak of; a top notch session IPA;

Gollywobbler is the nickname of main staysail used on schooners in light winds.

125/3105) Home:  Weiss Guy Hefeweizen by Sonehooker Brewing Company of Ontario:  **; 5.1%, 12 ibu; nose of cloves and bananas; similar flavours, an ideal Hefeweizen;

123/3103) Home:  850 Degrees Pizzeria Radial IPA by Stonehooker Brewing Company of Ontario:  **; 6.4%;  hazy; nose of tannins, resin; resiny flavours against a sweet malt backdrop;

850 Degrees is their favourite local pizzeria.  The Radial Railway was an electric rail line which ran from the Humber River to the Credit River from 1892 to 1935.

April 19, 2020

119/3099) Home:  Pineapple Radler by Waterloo Brewing Co. of Ontario:  *1/2; 2.5%;brewed with apple juice concentrate and pineapple juice; artificially sweet nose; tastes unnaturally sweet; apple overshadows the pineapple;

120/3100) Home:  Mae West Bodacious Orange Milkshake IPA by Stonehooker Brewing Company of Ontario:  *1/2; 6.5%, 55 ibu; named for the orange life jackets from WWII; going for an orange creamsicle effect; doesn't quite achieve this; orangy hop notes; right off the bat there is bitterness, and a splash of what could be lactose; not as sweet or as thick as most milkshake IPAs; at first it made me wonder if it was mislabelled;

I had feared on seeing their extensive beer list that it might be a situation like Refined Fool of Sarnia.  Brewers might find it advantageous to go the Badlands route and concentrate on only a few beers or styles, at least initially.

121/3101) Home:  Sou'Wester IPA by Stonehooker Brewing Company of Ontario:  **; 6.3%, 67 ibu; a West Coast IPA; fresh citrusy nose; mildly sweet citrus flavours; sweet finish but a dry after taste;

Stonehooker's customer service is excellent.  Their delivery driver phoned a few minutes before he arrived to let me know he was coming and I waited for him in the parking lot.  The building management is trying to discourage us from having deliveries of a personal nature sent to the office in order to reduce the number of people visiting but I think this gets around their worries.

April 18, 2020

116/3096) Home:  IPA by Sweetwater Brewing Company of Georgia, U.S.A.:  **1/2; 6.3%; "Can conditioned for fresher taste" - I wish I knew what that means; unfiltered but still pretty clear; brewed with barley malt and wheat; mildly sweet citrusy nose; delicious citrusy flavours;

114/3094) Home:  Hazy Jane by Brewdog of Scotland:  **1/2; a 7.2% New England Style IPA; oats and wheat were added to the grain bill; oats are not on the ingredient list but are mentioned elsewhere on the tin; nose of pineapple, lime, tannins; dry tannins to the taste along with stonefruit and citrus with a sweet finish;

 "an all out New England Patriot of a beer"

115/3095) Home:  Low Tide Zero IBU IPA by Lake of Bays of Ontario:  **; 2.5%; brewed with Idaho 7 hops and dry hopped with Belma and Sabro; hazy; thin; dry lemony nose; dry, mildly citrusy;

I am tempted to give bonus points for not using the phrase "session ale" even though it quite plainly is.

April 15, 2020

111/3091) Home:  Dubbel by Royal City Brewing of Ontario:  **1/2; a 7.5% Belgian ale;  the label reads, "Yes, made with dates, made for dates" and advises to enjoy with roast duck, oatmeal cookies, monasticism, share with friends and Walloons; malty, dried fruit nose; malty, mildly sweet, dried fruit flavours;  a very nice dubbel;

112/3092) Home:  Tripel Entente by Royal City Brewing of Ontario:  *1/2; 8.8%; here again the label counsels "Share with family and friars."; yeasty, spiced nose; hint of smoke, hint of sugar; musty and yeasty, mildly sweet; not so good as the dubbel;

April 12, 2020

110/3090) Home:  Budweiser Copper Lager by Labatts of Ontario:  **; 6.2%; aged on Jim Beam barrel staves; "The Reserve Collection:' nose is vanilla and bourbon; not to be snide but there is not much beer flavour to detract from the oak, strictly vanilla and bourbon;  still, not so bad;

April 11, 2020

109/3089) Home:  Scottish Ale by Highlander Brew Co. of Ontario:  *1/2; 5.4%; the tin refers to this as a "session ale"; beautiful rich brown colour;  an odd one; a bit thinner than I am used to when it comes to Scottish ales and with an uncommonly hoppy edge;

April 8, 2020

105/3085) Home:  Broad Reach Nor'Easter IPA by Stonehooker Brewing Company of Ontario:  **; 5.4%;  mildly hazy; tropical and citrus nose; juicy and citrusy;

Stonehooker is located in Mississauga, the Port Credit region, I think.  This beer is readily found in Mississauga Beer Stores.

The tin explains that stonehooking is a long lost trade involving quarrying the bottom of Lake Ontario with rakes and claws to retrieve stones which today make up the foundations of many historic buildings in the town of York, now known as Toronto.  I like it when two great interests of mine, beer and history, come together.

April 4, 2020

103/3083) Home:  Pier Point IPA by Sleeman's of Ontario:  **; 5.5%; clear; malty, herbal nose; nearly pilsner like dryness;

March 31, 2020

99/3079) Home:  Farmageddon Barrel Aged Wild Ale with Niagara Montmorency Cherries by Bellwoods Brewery of Ontario:  *; 6.3%; bottle conditioned; tart nose; very tart with muted cherry flavours;

93/3073) Home:  Ernest Salmon by Badlands Brewing of Ontario:  **1/2; a 6.5% American IPA double dry hopped with Simcoe and Amarillo hops; an American IPA, Saints be praised!; only mildly hazy;  little of the usual candied hop notes to the nose, rather tropical notes; flavours of pine and tropical; as close to an old school IPA as I dared wish for from Badlands;

Badlands supplies the information that Ernest Salmon, born in 1871, crossed a wild Manitoban hop with a cultivated English stock hop to create what we know today as Brewer’s Gold which is the foundation of nearly every high alpha hop variety.  They go on to reveal that Ernest Salmon made it to the mens' singles quarter final at Wimbledon in 1903.

March 26, 2020

92/3072) Home:  Fergie's Classic Pilsner by Sons Of Kent of Ontario:  **;  4.9%; mildly hazy; uncommonly sweet, mildly yeasty, only a hint of Saaz; it;'s definitely a pilsner but Sons Of Kent reins in the Saaz bitterness which is a stroke of genius;

Both Sons Of Kent and the great Ferguson Jenkins are from Chatham.  Baseball Hall Of Fame member Fergie Jenkins won 284 games, struck out 3192 batters and retired with an ERA of 3.34.

This beer was brewed to raise funds for a Children's Treatment Centre.

Today should be opening day.  Charlie Brown was right.  A hot dog does not taste as good without a baseball game going on behind it.

March 25, 2020

91/3071) Home:  Saison 13 By Unibroue of Quebec:  **; 6.1%, 19 ibu; a dry-hopped Belgian style saison; "non-refermented"; hazy; mildly spiced nose; sweeter than I am used to from a saison; only faint yeast, with mild spice and no mustiness;

March 24, 2020

90/3070) Home:  Baltic Ale by Rugner Insel Brauwerei of Germany:  **; 7.5%; a Belgian style dark strong ale; bottle conditioned; brewed with malted barley and malted wheat as well as dextrose; very much in the Belgian style; sweet yeasty nose; sweet and yeasty flavours;

The packaging reminds me of Bacchus which I tried some time ago.
